Exploring Panasonic's Post Focus camera feature
11th December 2015
Panasonic is rolling out its Post Focus feature to an increasing number of camera models, but what exactly is Post Focus and how does it differ to focus bracketing and focus stacking?
The DMC-GX8 is among the first Panasonic models to acquire Post Focus capability thanks to a firmware update
Basically, Post Focus is Panasonic's take on being able to shoot a still image and then being able to refocus that image afterwards. This is a feature that has been demonstrated in Lytro lightfield cameras and also some Nokia Lumia smartphones. Panasonic's cameras that are Post Focus enabled - a firmware update may be required - currently include the Micro Four Thirds DMC-GX8, G7 and the DMC-FZ330 bridge camera. The top of the range Lumix GH4 will also get Post Focus via a firmware update in the new year. None of these cameras works like a Lytro camera that uses lightfield optics and processing to record a still image that can be refocused, so how does Panasonic make it work?

Perhaps the biggest camera launch of the year, yet another new offering from Leica and it doesn't overly rely on the Leica M legacy. It's the Leica SL Type 601, the camera that launches Leica's new full frame mirrorless camera system. I'll have a closer look at the hardware in a separate article but I can give you some fundamental first impressions to accompany the gallery of RAW and JPEG sample images accessible towards the end of this page.

Photokina quick hands-on with the new Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX100
19th September 2014
A much bigger sensor for the new LX100 but that's not the whole story
Panasonic's new LX100 has a Four Thirds sensor at its heart
As the budget-end of the compact digital camera market is being slaughtered by smartphones, camera manufacturers are focusing on the premium end. Panasonic Lumix is a prime example with the launch, at Photokina this week, of their latest LX model, the LX100. The headline news concerning the LX100 is its use of basically the same 16 megapixel Four Thirds sensor found in the Lumix GX7 Micro Four Thirds mirrorless system camera.

London, August 28, 2014 – Writing on mademoisellerobot.com, fashion blogger Laetitia Wajnapel called her PEN "the ultimate fashion blogger camera". Pick up a new Olympus PEN E-PL7 and you will start to see why. PEN designers clearly understand something other camera brands often miss: people with an eye for style and first-class, creative photography don't want a bulky, plastic SLR spoiling their carefully crafted, personal look.

The new Nikon D810 is the revised D800
26th June 2014
Nikon has announced the successor to its highly successful Nikon D800 and it's called the D810. Outwardly very similar to its predecessor the D810 is an evolutionary rather than revolutionary release, the D810's main highlights include a wider ISO range selectable from 64 to 51200, implementation of the Expeed 4 image processir first seen in the Nikon D4S, faster shooting rates up to 7 frames per second, and the option of smaller RAW files using 12-bit data instead of 14-bits. By default the D810 is like the D800E in not having an optical low pass filter.
